When summer arrives many families like to take off together and enjoy a vacation. The weather is great, kids are out of school and quite often grandparents and other relatives are invited to come along. The question of course is: Where do we go? And what will be both fun and educational for everyone?

Though many prefer to fly off to some exotic destination there are other ways to travel. Consider something that both kids and adults will love and isn’t the ordinary fare: take the train! There are many old lines throughout the country that cater specifically to those seeking a scenic and educational experience. One such opportunity exists in Colorado with the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad. It offers many advantages to the vacationing family. To begin with the line travels along 64 miles of breath-taking mountain topography. You pass through tunnels and across trestles. The switchbacks and turns are exhilarating and the rugged face of Colorado has never been more majestically in view. Stop for lunch in a nowhere zone that will leave you feeling like you are back in time in a location untouched for centuries. Afterwards board the train for more adventure as you travel on to Antonito, Colorado. From there you will be taken by motor coach back to Chama where the trip began.
This 1880 railroad line and the narrow gauge train itself are living museums of history that allow you to step back in time and experience excitement, fun, history and family-made memories you will treasure for the rest of your lives.
