4 Tips to a Great Vacation

Vacations should be an exciting time for everybody, but often the person doing the planning winds up doing the majority of the stressing and worrying. Why? The biggest reasons are money and worst-case scenarios. Since you can’t control the worst-case scenarios, focus on fixing your money worries and on preventing money-related troubles that some travelers can run into.

Here are 4 tips for easing worries and having a great vacation:

  1. Do your research. Study up on the economy of the place to which you’ll be traveling, know where the U.S. embassy is in relation to where you’re going to be, and learn enough basic phrases in the local language to be able to get yourself to the embassy in an emergency. Did you know that the local embassy will loan you travel money if you are robbed while abroad? You can’t get stranded as long as you can reach the embassy, so relax.
  2. Take the path less traveled. Within reason, of course — you want to be in an area populated enough to be safe. However, avoiding tourist locations can drastically save on your spending for even basic things like food.
  3. Look into discounts and coupons for vacation packages. Many websites, such as Offers.com, can give great discounts on the same vacation you were going to pay more for on another site.
  4. Use traveler’s checks instead of cash. Thieves can’t use your checks like they could use stolen money, and checks are usually easier to carry around than cash.
